Bookshelf: On the Edge by Edward St. Aubyn

As reviewed in the NY Times:

ON THE EDGE By Edward St. Aubyn 260 pages. Picador. $16. With its mock-earnest references to “the astral plane,” “past-life regression work” and “vibrational energy,” Edward St. Aubyn’s “On the Edge” takes full advantage of an easy target: the New Age movement, teeming with frauds and fanatical gurus. Released in Britain in 1998 and being published for the first time in the United States, this novel follows a group of wretched characters in search of enlightenment, inner peace and relief from impotence, among other things. Peter Thorpe, a burned-out London banker, visits a California self-help retreat, posing as a devotee while obsessively trying to track down Sabine, a beautiful German woman he spent just three days with. The brokenhearted Crystal Bukowski proves a welcome distraction and rather adept at Tantric sex. Various other transcendence seekers converge in Big Sur as the narrative hurtles toward an ending that’s sweet, scathing, pornographic and deeply funny.

Alber Elbaz "Lanvin" Book

The holidays are approaching . . . Lanvin creative director Alber Elbaz's book about the French fashion house would make a great gift!

Albertine at the French Embassy New York City

The new Albertine Book Store in the French Embassy New York City was Designed by Jacques Garcia.

Tucked inside the historic Payne Whitney mansion, Albertine is the only reading room and bookshop in New York devoted solely to books in French and English with more than 14,000 contemporary and classic titles from 30 French-speaking countries.

A project of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the Albertine bookshop brings to life French-American intellectual exchange. The space reflects its belief in the power of literature and the humanities to increase understanding and friendship across borders, and in the power of books as a common good for a better world. In this spirit, Albertine hosts free debats and discussions exploring popular and classical culture through a modern and global lens.

History & Design

Albertine is housed in the official landmark Payne Whitney mansion in Manhattan. In 1902, former Standard Oil Company treasurer Oliver Hazard Payne commissioned the Italian Renaissance mansion as a wedding gift to his nephew Payne Whitney. Between 1902 and 1906, Stanford White, the famed architect of the Washington Square Arch, designed and oversaw construction of the mansion. Since 1952, the mansion has housed the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. The bookshop within the mansion was born in 2014, and its interiors were created by celebrated French designer Jacques Garcia (Chateau du Champ de Bataille in Normandy, France and The NoMad Hotel in New York City). Albertine’s ceiling is painted with a mural of constellations and planets inspired by the ceilings of Lorenzo de Medici created in the 1500s that capture “the knowledge of the world.” View photos of the ceiling painting in progress here. Busts of great figures from French and French-American culture including Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Tocqueville and Descartes will be on display. The centerpiece of the entrance of the building is a replica of Michelangelo’s Young Archer. The original had been in the lobby of the mansion for decades until it was discovered to be a Michelangelo in 2009. To our knowledge, it is the only Michelangelo statue on American soil. It is currently on loan at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Design Classic: The Wishbone Chair by Hans Wegner

In 1944, Danish designer Hans Wegner began a series of chairs that were inspired by portraits of Danish merchants sitting in Ming Chairs. One of these chairs was the Wishbone Chair (1949), also known as the “Y” or “CH-24,” which has been produced by the Danish firm Carl Hansen & Søn since 1950. The son of a shoemaker, Wegner was trained as a cabinetmaker before attending the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, after which he began his career as an architect. Just three years later, Wegner started his own design office, and his work soon caught the eye of the folks at Carl Hansen & Søn. The light, sculptural Wishbone Chair was exactly what the Hansen company was looking for to supplement the heavier forms that were popular at the time. However, the Wishbone was a challenging chair to make, as this steam-bent solid wood frame demands perfect craftsmanship and an intimate knowledge of wood joinery. Even today, the seat is still hand woven from paper cord, a durable material developed during WWII as a substitute for jute. Using the best natural materials, the sculptural Wishbone is made to last for generations and offers outstanding sitting comfort. Made in Denmark.

Whether gathering family together or entertaining friends for the holidays this iconic chair will make an attractive addition.

Louis Vuitton Iconoclasts Karl Lagerfeld

KARL on HIS INSPIRATIONS: "I am always with the line from Voltaire, that “Everything that needs an explanation, isn’t worth the explanation.” So what can I explain?

By now you’ve seen what I did? It’s fun! In fact I had several ideas and Louis Vuitton wanted to do them all—why not? All of the boxing things are related.

I know more and more women—and men too—who have started to box. I thought it was something that one should do, if possible, in a very expensive way. So I designed the huge piece of luggage with the punching-ball in it. I also wanted to make a bag that was inspired by that idea; it comes in different sizes. We made a special carpet with an application for beginners: where and how to put your feet and how to move. There is also a little bag with boxing gloves, it can be taken to the boxing appointment—I wanted to have a special Monogram for that too. It was really very childish, simple thinking!

I imagined people would keep the trunk in their dressing rooms and use it as a closet. You remove the punching-ball, put that on its special metal stand, and use it like that. You can use the shelves, put them in the trunk and it becomes a very chic closet. There is a system that you put under it, to move it on wheels. And you can then push it into the house. It is a huge toy for spoilt, grown-up people!

You know I sketch everything myself? If I don’t do it, I am bored! For the Vuitton project I sketched everything by hand. I know others do computer sketches, but I always have to use my hands.

PUNCHING BAG BABY KARL LAGERFELD M40230 $3,400.00 This is the smallest piece from Karl Lagerfeld’s extravagant Boxing suite – and with its longer, curvy silhouette, it is surely the most flirtatious. The “Baby” Punching Bag brings a fresh, feminine allure to iconic Monogram canvas. The material is supple and body-friendly, beautifully enhanced with double chain handles in aged golden brass. A special tanning process gives the cowhide leather trim an appealingly lived-in, vintage look. DETAILED FEATURES FOR AVAILABILITY AND INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL +1.866.VUITTON

Fendi By the Way Bag Fall 2014

Fendi's new "By The Way" Bag is a Favourite for Fall 2014.

SENSO (1954) Movie Trailer

This is an original trailer for the 1954 Italian film SENSO, directed by Luchino Visconti, and starring Alida Valli, Farley Granger and Massimo Girotti. It was adapted by Carlo Alianello, Suso Cecchi d'Amico, Giorgio Bassani, Giorgio Prosperi and Visconti from Camillo Boito's eponymous novella. Writers Tennessee Williams and Paul Bowles scripted the dialogue for the English-language version of the film. French filmmaker Jean Renoir was, reportedly, the supervisor of the French dubbed version.

SENSO is a tragic romance set in the year 1866, when the Third Italian War of Independence was coming to an end. During the Austrian occupation of her country, Livia Serpeiri (Valli), a beautiful Italian countess married to an older aristocrat, puts her marriage and political principles on the line by engaging in a torrid affair with a dashing Austrian lieutenant (Granger). Abandoning all reason, Livia is unable to see that she is only being used for her money and social standing, until it is too late, and she finds herself driven to the point of madness.

Gilded with ornate costumes by Macel Escoffier and Piero Tosi, and settings by Ottavio Scotti , this operatic melodrama is an extraordinary evocation of reckless emotions from director Visconti, one of cinema's great sensualists. The picture was brilliantly photographed in rich Technicolor by cinematographers G.R. Aldo (who died during production) and Robert Krasker. The stirring musical score was adapted by Franco Ferrara from the works of composer Anton Bruckner.

Lot #41

Intimé dates from the height of Vuillard’s Nabis period, when his pictures were at their most visually textured and saturated with color. The room depicted here is one in Misia and Thadee Nathanson’s summer cottage in Valvins, where Vuillard was a frequent house guest, along with the couple’s other artist-friends. Painted in 1896, this scene depicts a view of an occupied bedroom through an opened doorway. The catalogue raisonne explains that the slumbering figure is Cipa Godebski, the young Polish sculptor, whom Vuillard depicted at closer view in two other oils around the same time. In many of his depictions of the Nathanson’s cottage, Vuillard delighted in manipulating the spatial perspective and creating views that exploited the oddities and bohemian spirit of the interior furnishings and its inhabitants. The present work, with its unconscious subject enveloped beneath the bedclothes, is one of Vuillard’s most voyeuristic of these pictures.
